"My children won’t be hungry. Thank you so much for these seeds."

How a box of seeds could change a family's life forever

Have you ever stepped back from your life amid a storm and felt as though nothing has gone the way you planned?

You have followed all the steps, worked hard and tirelessly. But you feel like you are still in the same place or worse off. Often it is hard to see God’s hand at work, in those seasons and so many of us become disheartened or defeated.

For many of the families who walk through MWB's door, that disheartened defeat is their daily battle. Often it is hard to ask for help, acknowledging that they can’t do it on their own. Some are educated, others never had anyone tell them that they could do more with their life or be more, some just don't have the resources or access to opportunity. But all of them are looking for that same hope that things could be better.

For the Razic family, they worked hard to beat the odds so that their children a better future. After surviving war, PTSD, unemployment and unyielding poverty it was defeating to find themselves in the same position, unable to feed their children let alone find new dreams for their future. But even in their desperation, God was at work and in one of their lowest moments, no job, no hope, the couple turned to Mission Without Borders (MWB).

Senad reflected on the moment when they walked through MWB's doors for the first time, he shared, “It was so hard for me to accept that I was part of a group of people in poverty, needing help and that I wasn’t able to provide for my family. Now I’m so happy that we asked for your help."

A GIFT OF SEEDS

Through our Seeds of Hope project, the Razic family were given a box of seeds, which they were able to plant in Muamera’s mothers' backyard. Muamera said, “Thanks to you, we planted 5kg of potatoes, 3kg onions, green beans, peas, lettuces, spinach, Swiss chard and beans. I know so many recipes that I can make with these ingredients – delicious meals that will make our stomachs full. We’ll have enough fresh vegetables for the whole year. Maybe I’ll be able to freeze some but we will have enough potatoes and onions over next winter. This, combined with the food parcel that we got from you, means that we don’t have to worry about how to get money for food.”

You could feel the newfound purpose and hope radiate around the entire room as Muamera shared all that was now possible because of one box of seeds and community of people who cared. Drazan Jarak, MWB’s family coordinator in Mostar, said, “I was deeply affected by this family, by these two brave people ploughing through their daily challenges. Both Muamera and Senad had hopes and dreams, but financial insecurity, poor health and increasing distrust in everything that surrounded them.”

This journey with the Ravic family has created a gateway for conversations about God’s hand in their lives even in the trials and storms. Senad leans back from the trenches he has been digging, looking for the words to express all that this support has done for him. He shares, “I was so surprised by the way you treated us, with such dignity and respect that we haven’t experienced for a long time. I’ll never be able to thank you enough for that and for the many other things that you have done for us. I now believe that nothing is unattainable with our work, will and discipline, and your support. Thank you for showing us that there are people who care. ”

EMPOWERING A FUTURE

What I love about our Seeds of Hope project, is that our investment gets put into the hands of people who need the hope that they can overcome their circumstances. With seeds in their hands, they feel empowered to try again and as they work the soil they are shown that their hard work has a purpose and when they see the sprouts it is the hope that they can create change for them and their families future.

It is one thing to receive a box of food and be grateful for the unspeakable impact it has in their life. But for so many of our families who are apart of our Seeds of Hope project nothing compares to the unbridled joy they feel when they see that their endurance, hard-work and faith has made a difference.

Through a $30 box of seeds, new hope has taken root in the Razic family. With food to feed their children, Muamera and Senad now have room to start their faith journey to self-sufficiency.

I was so surprised by the way you treated us, with such dignity and respect that we haven’t experienced for a long time. I’ll never be able to thank you enough for that and for the many other things that you have done for us. I now believe that nothing is unattainable with our work, will and discipline, and your support. Thank you for showing us that there are people who care. Senad, Seeds of Hope
